Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
